- Emma Louise P. marries Rev. James Pillsbury Lane in Hampstead, NH. He
was pastor of the Congragational churches in East Weymouth, Mass. and
of
Andover Mass, Bristol Rhode Island, and Norton, Mass. Came from the
Congregational church in East Weymouth in 1861.

Artist Albert Bierstedt visits Yosemite Valley
1864
April
20 – James Hutchings, his wife, Elvira, and his mother-in-law Florantha T. Sproat, take possession of the Upper Hotel. Mrs. Sproat was ten years older
than her son-in-law. The hotel was twenty by sixty foot and was renamed Hutchings House soon after that.
June
30 – Yosemite Grant signed by Abraham Lincoln.
August
23 – Florance Hutchings, a daughter, is born to James and Elvira Hutchings.
Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia deeded to the state from the federal government as a grant to be held for the public "in perpetuity."
Grant consists of 48.6 square miles. A Board of Commissioners established with Fredrick Law Olmstead as the first Chairman.

12 - Daniel Sargent P. Came from the Presbyterian church in New York City under the pastral care of Rev. Dr. Burchard.

28 - Bernard H. b. to Emma L. P.Lane & Stephen P. Lane. Attends Stanford with ES & AC and becomes a proof reader in the government printing office,
Washington D.C.
Mill in Canada, where Muir is working, burns. He returns to the U. S. and finds a job as an engineer.
Galen Glark appointed Guardian of Yosemite Grant.
Yosemite commissioners disallow private claims on Yosemite Lands.
1867
March – Muir suffers and injury to his eye and is confined to the dark for six weeks.
September – Muir begins 1,000 mile walk to California.
October – Another daughter, Gertrude is born to the Hutchings family in Yosemite.
Foley family settles in California near Marysville.
1868
Charles Warren Stoddard spends part of the winter with the Hutchings family in Yosemite.
Muir arrives in San Francisco, immediately leaves for Yosemite.
May
25 – Charles Hitchcock Adams, father of Ansel, born in San Francisco to Cassandra and William, the last of their five children. “Unadilla,” the Adams
twenty-three room family home, is constructed on 54 acres in what is now Atherton, California.
December
18 – Julius Theodore Boysen born in San Francisco to Julius and Albina Lindstrom.
Leidigs living in Lamon's two story log cabin near present location of Ahwahnee. Agnes Leidig dies just before Christmas of spoiled peaches. She is
buried in the Valley.

2 - John A. Born to Emma L.P. Lane & Stephen P. Lane is born. Will in later life be employed in the architectural dept of the Treasury building at
Washington. A graduate from the Normal Art School of Boston.

26 - Last rail laid in Los Angeles for L.A. San Pedro railway.

Yosemite commissioners give permission for two more hotels in the Valley. These are build in the Lower Village. The first is a remodeled building owned by
Alex Black, a private land claimant, the second is owned by Fred and Isabella Leidig. 1,122 people visit the Valley during the year.
March
8 – Charles T. Leidig is born in the Valley. First white boy.
June
22 - Leidig's Hotel opens in Lower Village. Leidigs had eleven children, six girls who survived and four boys.
August
31 - Harry Clifford Pidgeon on a farm in Iowa. His father, Isaac Marion Pidgeon, was married 3 times and had a total of 12 children. The family were
Quakers. At the age of 15, Harry set out for California where he found work on a ranch.
Lower Hotel removed. A. G. Black builds Black's Hotel on its site.
Central Pacific Railroad completed from Sacramento to Stockton.
1870

9 – Arthur Clarence Pillsbury is born to Dr. Harlin Henry Pillsbury and Harriet Foster Pillsbury in Medford, Mass. (H.H. 37 years old)
Author Theresa Yelvreton visits the Valley, staying in the new Rock Cottage. She used the person of Floy in her book, Zanita.
The Casa Nevada Hotel operated by Emily and Albert Snow is hosting visitors near the foot of Nevada Falls.
Copperopolis branch of Central Pacific Railroad built.
J. C. Smith builds Cosmopolitan Bathhouse and Saloon.
